What is it for?

It allows you to live in Spain without any employment or professional activity, living on investment income, savings, pensions or other passive income. It is the usual route for retirees and people with their own assets.

You apply from your country of origin or residence, at the Spanish consulate, together with the residence visa. Once in Spain you apply for the TIE.

  • No criminal record in Spain or in the countries where you have lived in the last 5 years.
  • Not being flagged as inadmissible in the territory of countries with which Spain has signed an agreement.
  • Sufficient financial means: generally 400% of the annual IPREM for the applicant and 100% of the IPREM for each dependent family member, for the whole period of residence.

Go to the procedure

Deadlines and timings
  • Decision on the authorisation: 1 month from filing at the consulate (silence means refusal).
  • Visa: normally 1 month from notification of the decision; it must be collected in person within 1 month.
  • Entry into Spain: within the validity of the visa (3 months). TIE: 1 month from entry.
  • Duration: 1 year for the initial authorisation. Renewals have a longer validity under the new Regulation (2 years for non-lucrative residence): check the current information sheet.
Watch out for this
This authorisation does not allow you to work. If you want to work, consider international teleworking, residence and work as an employee or self-employed person, or a later change of authorisation.
To renew it you must prove real and effective residence in Spain for more than 183 days a year: long absences can cost you the renewal.
