It keeps your situation regular when your residence (or residence and work) authorisation is about to expire. Under the current Regulation, renewals last longer than before, which reduces how often you have to repeat the procedure.
The application is filed at the Immigration Office and, while it is being decided, the previous authorisation is extended: you can keep working with the receipt.
- Holders of a temporary residence, or residence and work, authorisation that is about to expire.
- Keeping the conditions that gave rise to the authorisation, or being in one of the alternative situations provided for (continuity of the employment relationship, a new contract, contributory unemployment benefit, minimum contribution periods, etc.).
- Proving that dependent children of compulsory school age are enrolled in school.
- No new criminal record and no entry ban.
- Having actually lived in Spain during the validity of the authorisation, without absences longer than allowed.

- File the renewal during the 60 calendar days before expiry, or within the 90 calendar days after it (in that case a penalty procedure may be started, but the application is still accepted).
- Filing on time extends the validity of the previous authorisation until a decision is taken.
- Decision: 3 months. For renewals, administrative silence is positive.
- TIE: 1 month from notification of the decision.
Do not skip filing the renewal because you cannot get an appointment: you can file online or at any public register within the deadline.
If you have changed the type of authorisation (for example from employment to self-employment), what applies is a change of authorisation, not a simple renewal.
